Isaiah was a very learned and respected prophet. Many of the New Testament authors referred to his prophecies. One of those prophecies concerns the country of Syria and the city of Damascus. The current civil war has lasted two years and has displaced half of Syria’s population. I heard a report yesterday that the U.S. is considering a covert operation into the country to locate the weapons of mass destruction that they believe Assad will use. This would be a very dangerous operation. If any of these weapons are mishandled, it could result in a major nuclear explosion that could destroy the whole country.
We know that the destruction of Damascus is prophesied in Amos 1:5: ‘I will break also the bar of Damascus and cut off the inhabitants from the plain of Aven, and him that holdeth the scepter from the house of Eden, and the people of Syriash all go into captivity unto Kir, saith the Lord.’ In Isaiah 17:1 the prophet says: ‘Behold Damascus is taken away from being a city, and it shall be a ruinous heap.’ Are we presently looking at the fulfillment of this prophecy? According to history the city of Damascus has yet to be destroyed. Is the time near for this destruction? What we do know is that there are many God fearing people in Damascus who know the Lord and are born again Christians. We need to pray the Lord will protect His own, and that His will be done!
